About this project
Landfills are a climate disaster, emitting more CO₂-equivalent than even the aviation sector. They’re also sorely neglected, and especially so in the Global South, where they are often open dumps freely emitting methane, carbon dioxide and other air pollutants.
StratX aims to change this with biocovers: layers of soil containing methane-consuming microbes. This will oxidize the methane being released by the landfill and convert it into water and CO2. They will then use crushed concrete containing calcium silicate to accelerate enhanced silicate weathering reactions that lock the CO₂ into stable carbonate forms over long timescales.
StratX, whose business model relies on the growing voluntary carbon credits market, is set to launch their first pilot in early 2027. StratX aims to unlock a scalable solution for one of the world’s most under-addressed emissions sources.

Q: What makes you unique?
Kevin Wheeler: Firstly, we’re trying to address emissions from the solid waste sector at global scale. There’s no real solution to that unless you have massive behavioural change around the world.
Secondly, we’re unique because we’re focusing on landfills in the Global South and no one’s doing that.
Thirdly, we share a component of our revenues with local communities, which is unique for landfill solutions.
Fourthly: our core technology is very robust basic tech which should work just about anywhere. Its simplicity, compared to other climate tech, is rare.
Fifthly: using enhanced rock weathering, which has been done in research labs but hasn’t been deployed at scale yet in landfill settings.
